Speed Control Sensor- does it belong?

1984 300D

The vehicle comes equiped with a speed control sensor plug but did not have a unit installed in it. I have pulled one from a yard that will fit in but before I plug it in, what is it and what does it do- is this compatable with the vehicle I own or do I risk blowing it up somehow?
