What happened? Alt. light on then gone

Started the car yesterday and the alternator light came on and stayed on. Also had no gauges or turn signals. Stopped the car a few minutes later and when restarted everything was fine. It is a little disconcerting to ride down the road with your oil pressure gauge on zero! Now everything seems to be fine, car has a new battery. Is my alternator getting ready to go?

Check your alternator brushes. They are easy to replace and not very expensive.

Also, check your grounding straps. Especially the engine-chassis strap down by the starter.

Same thing happened to me.

Being the mechanical genius that I am, I opted to replace the alt instead of replacing brushes. Got one from ebay for like $70, bolted it up and no problem for the last 30K.

Cheers,

Bill

Try replacing this:

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1W316OSUV1W316OXRI&year=1987&make=MB&model=300-DT-002&category=F&part=Voltage+Regulator

Takes all of 5 minutes to replace.

Danny
