Why won't my trunk latch work??

First I couldn't get it open, now it won't latch.

Some days with an very firm hand it will latch every time (let's just call it what it is - slamming).

Today I had to quit trying before the neighbors came out to chastise me. (I'd just spent and hour grinding out rust from around the jackpoints.)

I've tried to adjust the lid latch from right to left. The only thing I can think is that the hole isn't catching on the lock latch. I'm think about filing/ grinding the hole a little bigger.

Here's what I know: I got a new trunk lid from the junkyard to replace the rusted one that I had.

The new one also came from a 240D but it seems to be a slightly different size. Just a bit, but enough that the adjustment of the lid on the hinges is not the same as the original. I've got a nice, even 1/8" reveal at the back of the lid.

Now, when I first installed it, the thing sat too far foward and when I closed the trunk the latch jammed. Nothing doin' - I couldn't open it for the life of me.

Finally I got a three foot piece of oak baseboard and pried it open with a violent pop. Glad to say that nothing was bent or damaged in any way.

There's more, but I'll spare you.
A little help, please?

On my w126, theirs to bolts that hold the latch on the trunk lid.

loosening these allows you wo "wiggle" it around, and there was three spacers under mine.

I've got one spacer. The original had none. I did try to lay in a fender washer between the latch and the spacer, but that didn't seem to help.

My process of elimination is coming up short.

Okay, here we go. The lid itself adjusts fore and aft. The lid latch: fore/aft and R/L. Just takes some fine tuning of those movements.

Thanks anyway though. I know I'll be back. Maybe with more interesting questions.
