This may be obvious to some of you but I was wondering what the light beside the battery and brake light is. It lights up every so often and I don't know what it is indicating. Thanks

What's the icon on the light? What color?

If it's a circle with dashed lines on either side, could indicate low brake fluid (there are two chambers in the reservoir) or worn brake pads.

Low brake fluid in the reservoir is indicated by the RED "BRAKE" light Not the circle with dashes, that is strictly the brake pad wear indicator.

240D indications Left to right/

Bright lights (blue)
Battery/alternator light (red)
Brake pad wear indicator (white)
"Brake" Light for Parking brake engaged or brake fluid low (red)
Seat belt warning light (red)
Glow plug light ( white or yellow if old)
