Question 83 240 steering

Need some advise as to the play in my steering wheel. An 83 240D with 214,00 mi and steering wheel has loose play from 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock positions. I was told that it was a worn steering gearbox. Anyone with expert advise? Do you think that's it or maybe somethin else. Also, have a clicking sound from rear end when moving slow and hit a bump.

Many threads regarding this issue. Most every one says the play is in tie rod ends and idler arm. Check these first. On my 81, these were ok. I adjusted the set screw on the top of the gear box. Turning it out, counter clockwise about half a turn, then tightening the jamb nut. Made a big difference. turning it out too far will cause binding in the box, steering will be stiff to return to center. Also look closely at the flex joint just above the gearbox, seen a few that were sloppy. Have someone rock the steering wheel back/forth while you hold the joint to feel for play.
