Question about transmission and cooling
Two days ago i replaced my transmission oil filter, also drained the torque converter, added new oil.But since then when the transmission is cold it seems to slip from first to second....After its been driven for several kilometres all seems ok no more slipping. Why?Is there something I missed,or is there another ajustment? Its a 300 SD 1983
My next question has to do with my engine coolant. Is there an efficiant way to drain all of the coolant in the engine. Best regards Dan Vancouver Canada |

Have you checked the fluid level?
What was the condition of the fluid you drained? How did you fill the transmission after draining? There is a block drain on the turbo side of the engine block aft of the water pump but ahead of the engine mount. Draining the block and the radiator should remove most of the coolant. Flushing with clear water is a good idea. If the old coolant had rust scales, a citric acid flush is a good idea. If the old coolant had oil, a degreaser (diswashing soap) flush is a good idea. The oil was a dark red colour,I also saw a very little amount of metal shavings in the oil pan. When I was ready to refill the transmission I simply added oil (4 Litres) to start, then I started the car and started shifting the stick shift from park to reverse to drive to lower gears etc.then when transmission was hot i check the oil level again and added more oil.All together about 6 and a half Litres.
The reason I ask about the coolant is that I would like to do a little winter tune up,the antifreeze was last replaced about 4 years ago.Its more of a preventive maintenance thing then anything else. Thank's so much for your help! Regards Dan |
