MB USA Technical Literature
G'mornin' Folks,
Yesterday I received my copy of... "Technical Data Passenger Cars, April 1985 Edition" Covers Models 107 as of 01/1982 123 as of 01/1982 124 as of start of production 126 as of 01/1982 201 as of 01/1982 This little book, sort of a technician's toolbox reference, has a wealth of info if you are interested in the tech data of these vehicles.....or if you are having electrical and/or vacuum problems, amoung others!! I have not even browsed the entire book, 509 pages, but what I have found that is of interest here is... Vacuum Line Color Codes, broken down by system i.e. Door Locks, Climate Wireing Harness ID, and Color Codes Shift Points of Automatic Transmissions All sorts of Injection Pump info All sorts of Ignition Timing info....good for Gassers Spring/Shock data....Info on tuning suspension Rear Axel Data.....including Differential Steering linkage, Allignment Specs Valve Clearances Cylinder Bores and way more stuff that is of interest to anyone who is seriously involved in maintaining these older Benzes....I think it well worth the $29.95 that I paid to MBUSA Classic....... Just thought y'all would wanna know......this is not a "how to" manual, it is simply a Technician's Reference Book.....all data......no pictures..... SB

that would be worth it to me for just the vac line diagram... is there a order form on the mb website or did you call them for it?

Just text..... some of the few illustrations are related to engine v-belt routings, torque sequence diagrams, axel position and frame measurements, and air gaps of various body panels It can be ordered online from http://www.mbusa.com/heritage/index.do just mouse over the "Classic Center" tab....and select "Technical Literature" You will get a page where you can identify your year and model of car, chassis designation, engine designation, and it will turn up all the literature that MB offers for that particular model........ I have also purchased the "Model 123 Service Library" offered only on CD.... it contains.....Literature pertaining to the following Models from '77-'85 230, 240D, 280E, 280CE, 300D, 300CD, 300TD, 300D-T, 300CD-T, 300TD-T For an '85 300D-T...the only section that I have opened...... Engine Manual Electrical Troubleshooting Manual Maintenance Manual Owners Manual Climate Control Manual Chassis and Body Manual it appears that these are the complete manuals that sell for BIG$$$$$ on e-Bay....but in .pdf format..... UNFORTUNATELY it is unsearchable.......you have to go to each individual manual, read the index and page thru as you would in a book......in order to locate whatever info you desire......if MB printed it, it's in here someplace!!! This little book that I refer to in this thread is...as I've stated before....a Service Tech's Toolbox Reference Book......supplimentary information, for the person who is actually turning the wrenches......like the Vacuum Line Color Codes......or Hydropneumatic Suspension Testing Values..... I apologize if I have peaked anyones hopes on an easy to find list of diagrams, however as I am a retired Engineer, I find the little "Technical Data Passenger Cars" book to be very informative, and quite interesting.......if you are considering purchasing parts to transplant a 5 speed manual transmission into a 300D-T......it lists the correct part numbers for which flywheels fit which engines, and which pressure plates fit which flywheels.....and which clutch friction discs fit which transmission spline.......and so forth..... Whew...that kinda got a bit long winded..... SB

Does anyone know where to get a manual for an 87 300D? I looked on MB's website, but they didn't appear to have one listed for this year.

I just looked, and you are correct, there are no shop manuals available on the MBUSA Classic website......but there are 3 publications, 2 are similar to the li'l book that I began this thread about...... ....you should try e-Bay......do a search for Mercedes Benz Manuals 300D 1987.......save the search and check (or uncheck) the appropriate boxes and you will get regular updates via e-mail......I managed to get a copy of "Service Manual Heating, Air Conditioning Automatic Climate Control Model 123" for $25.00.......you will just have to watch the going prices for your particular model and year......and bid accordingly....... I personally don't care for (and have no use for) Haynes Manuals....but they may prove useful to you....... Or, you may try this website... http://www.alldatadiy.com/ I use it for my F-150, and used to have a subscription for a 240D that I used to own.......it does have a bunch of good info, geared to the DIY kinda folks. Also....depending on what you are intending/attempting to do.....look at this website.... http://www.**************.com/ I have purchased his booklet on "Diesel Vacuum Source Troubleshooting and Repair".......found it very useful, to be well written for the average MB owner. He has several other booklets on various topics for sale... I personally do not have a problem in paying someone to "pick their brains"!!! Bottom line...I guess....is e-Bay....... Luck to ya... SB

Yeah, I haven't had much luck with ebay. There aren't hard copies of anything there, and I've bought 2 sets of software, neither one of them would load properly. I can't understand why there wouldn't be an acutal book form service manual for the 87 300D. I guess because it was a wierd model, a W124 body style with an SDL engine. I suppose I could get a manual for a 300E and for a 300SDL and have all the info I need

There is newer material available, however it is on DVD at a higher cost than the older classic data. The DVD Repair Guides for newer models are Roughly $85.00 USD with regular shipping. Have a great day.

Pretty sure the DVD's are only for newer chassis, like the 140, 129, 210, etc. The older ones are still on CD as far as I know. And not all newer chassis have a DVD released. You can get copies of the WIS, which have most all chassis from the late 80's up, but the WIS is intended for use by dealer techs and it is NOT, repeat NOT, user friendly. (A decent portion of the W124 CD-ROM is actually PDF's of the WIS content, btw.)
