starter pull on my 71 220d

Hi all.
I have a new (to me) 1971 220d with a starter pull that requires some serious arm muscle to engage. I'm new to the manual-start diesels, so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this is normal. After I start the car I have a dent in my finger and a tired arm!

Any thoughts are much appreciated.
