starter pull on my 71 220d
Hi all.
I have a new (to me) 1971 220d with a starter pull that requires some serious arm muscle to engage. I'm new to the manual-start diesels, so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this is normal. After I start the car I have a dent in my finger and a tired arm! Any thoughts are much appreciated. Amos |

Your Gorilla Knob
From what I've seen, they all have a hard pull. You could try cleaning and lubing the connections if you feel it's a little *too* hard to pull.

there are also adjustments and rubber bushings that can go bad. i would examine the linkage inside the engine compartment and see if it all looks copa setic.
you shouldnt get dents in your fingers i dont think! tom w

A tired arm in the winter after an extended glow cycle is pretty normal, however I don't remember getting any finger dents. The really good part of the Gorilla Knob is that you don't have to ever worry about vacuum problems causing the car to not shut off when you want it to. Also there is one less line running into the cabin that can eventually leak Black engine oil on your shoes and pant leg.

When I first read this I pictured a lawnmower style rope under the hood. now THAT would make your arm sore!
