I need to do something with the valve cover. I have not made up my mind what to do with it yet.

I got to thinking about the amount of gear wear that I am seeing. I have no doubt that the gears that I took out of the engine could have gone for another 200k miles without any problems. My personality won't let me go through this rebuild without putting it back together new. Somewhere down the road this gearset will quit gearing and the worst that is going to happen is to loose oil pressure and dump some metal pieces into the oil system.

Anybody want to purchase a set of used gears for their 240D. Remember, the man told me that they had an inventory of 17 when I ordered mine. Wonder if they will make anymore when they are all gone?

No dont polish it that makes it look like a "pimp my ride" engine. Just clean it and let it be.

Engine and tranny are back in the car and hopefully I will fire this jewel up over the next week or so.
Seems that riding the HD takes precedence over getting this car back going. The weather has been good m/c riding weather lately.

Awww, tell me you painted the head...

after such a nice job painting the block, you installed the head bare??? now you are going to get some ribbing again.
beautiful job. What did the piston/sleeves and machine shop install cost you?
I have a 617, with a blown head gasket and only 114K miles on it. and I am just itching to tear it down and port and polish the head/manifolds and see if I can get some power out of a NA 5cyl.

I'll post a pic tomorrow evening. I painted the head glossy black.
Pistons were around $140/each and I think the machine shop bill came in around $800. The head received new exh valves and all new guides. In addition, it has a new vacuum pump and a new oil pump drive gear$et along with new timing chain/guides, brgs and seals/gaskets. I chose not to replace the oil pump because it looks like it has already been replaced.

By the look of the amount of sludge on the rocker post, I would say lack of oil changes that led to high wear & engine rebuild.
I would just scotchbrite the valve cover-no buffing to a mirror like shine.
I just went through my 617 for oil leaking out the back of the head gasket. Hopefully when you check the head, you won't find what I did. These cars run well with cracks all over the combustion chambers. Luckily I found one cheap & had a friend check it & polish up the ports. Must've had frequent oil changes on mine. After 290,000 miles, I had zero sludge & only some slight wear on the rocker rails. Paul.

It's running. During the rebuild I went with an intake/exhaust manifold off of a w115 240D engine so now I have to complete the set up for the blow by hose assembly. I've got it set up to run temporary right now and will resolve it tomorrow. The oil pressure looks good.

It came out good. I have attached a pic of the performance intake I have mounted on it. Now where did I put that Sawsall.

The pic with the K&N filter was a spoof.

Anyway, I have put about 400 miles on the engine and it starts easy, does not use any oil and runs out good BUT the first start of the day start ups are pretty alarming because of the smoke. I don't really see any color to it and suspect it is unburned fuel. I'm considering having the injectors tested.
Any thoughts/comments?

It may just need to break in some more. Amount of smoke seems to be decreasing. I'll probably still get the injectors tested over the next couple weeks.

it was not in time. Did the old drip timing today and the smokey cold starts have ended. It was full flow at 24dBTDC #1. Set it (moved the ip towards the block) and it made a world of difference. The neighbors don't stare at me during start up anymore.
