No Factory AC?

Did some 240Ds come with out AC? One of my '79 240Ds has definite signs of an aftermarket AC system being installed...did they replace the original or was it an add on?

I've seen a few early 240D's without A/C and one euro 300D without it.

I don't think I've seen any turbodiesels without it.

How early was the one you saw with no AC? I think my car may have come with out it because the panel where the factory AC knob is located is bare in this car other than the hole somebody drilled to mount the aftermarket AC controls.

Take a pic of the center console. I would say that 240's were probably available without in US. Whats the fuss? Wanna know if its a euro?

Just curious. I have already removed the compressor. I think I may pull the under dash parts as well. The aftermarket unit takes up a fair about of the passenger side foot well.

I know of several aftermarket A/C's the were installed on 240D's, these cars did have an A/C. but it was the York unit which never really cooled and nearly drained what little power that these cars had. My 240D 77 came with a York, but I had it removed when I installed a new motor, pretty damn useless.

I know you're in Houston, how do you survive our summers with no a/c? Do you use the old "455" a/c system? (4 windows down, 55 mph for those who don't know).

I have to drive 5 miles to work, that helps, but even in the old days when I had a fully functional A/C I never used it simply because it never really cooled the car, the York is the worst A/C system installed on ANY car.
As for all 4 windows down, no, only driver side window is enogh. One big advantage of 123 cars is their fresh air intake/vent system, I have the center vents facing me and they are really effective. On our SD and later models if the A/C went down the vents will not do you any good, you end up cooking.
Now, I can tell you that my wife hates this car big time, on her E320 the damn A/C is on all the time.

The only ones without factory AC would be Euro models. I have two of them, both with aftermarket a/c.

I bought a 77 240D new and a/c was standard.

My 84 Euro 300D (Cloth seats!) has an aftermarket Volvo compressor / AC system installed. Which, uh, currently doesn't work.. heh heh.

You bought a 77 new . . . That is really cool

As Larry stated, all the 300Ds for the US market had AC. I drove (didn't own) a new 1978 300D 4 speed in the Netherlands and it did not have AC. The average temp. there is 50 fahrenheit. Although they just had the warmest summer in the last 300 years. They are still having weather in the 70's, which is really warm for this time of year.
