idle klacking at 65mph??
At 65mph, it made a louder, faster version of the idle speed "klitty-klak"...
Ok, so I just got the new driveshaft support in, thumping is gone. Got it up to 65, all was well, then it suddenly started to have a sound that can only be described as that metallic klacking sound these engines make at idle. The only difference was that it was a little louder, and had more "klacks" per minute (kpm's). It seemed to be coming from somewhere towards the driver side of the engine compartment, but I cant be sure. So, I slowed down (did notice a little more smoke out the back then usual), and limped home a bit slower. The sound went away, and it seems to be running fine. Any thoughts???

1. Check your oil level. But could also be "nailing"
2. Black smoke is usually a bit of incompletely burned fuel. Could have an injector that has a bit of crud or carbon build up, resulting in a poor spray pattern.

Oil should be fine. I was kinda hoping it was a successful Italian tuneup, but I doubt it. The smoke seemed to be more blue that black. But I wasn't really focusing on that at the time.

If it's running fine and the noise went away, could be a good Italian tune up. Blue smoke is engine oil smoke.
My car has 223,000. Does not burn oil, but likes to drip fron the oil separator and has blowby. Run great though. Loses about a 1/2 qt every 2500 miles. I figure she's just marking her territory.

Does the "klacking" happen when the engine is revved up or under acceleration on a grade? Is it more noticeable when the engine is cold and then becomes less "klacky" as the engine warms up?

I would look at what happened just before the noise started "new driveshaft support ". That would make me think they could be related. Can you take it back to the folks that did the job and ask them to check it over.

I'm the folks that did the driveshaft. I may have messed something up, but it seemed to be eminating from the engine compartment, and engine related. I was jsut out for a spin and it didnt happen again. Driving on the same road, I can now say that I was definately heading uphill, and after 10 minutes of driving, it was also plenty hot. This wasn't the normal cold weather klack.

Yeah, that guy's done some pretty shoddy work in the past.
Anyway, now it seems to be running smoother. It may have actually been a strange variety of italian tuneup. perhaps sicilian?
