OK, how about if the car blows a lot of oil...?

Glad the OP got his motor together.
my 79 TD has more like 300K on it, No idea for sure, STUPID ODO... anyway, I lose a lot of oil, and no external leaks to speak of. non turbo, the PCV line has oil on it, I have cleaned it well. I get light smoke that is visible at night through follower's headlight beams. I plan to change the valve seals, but am not thinking it will help much. the sleeves are only about 38.00 each, and I have a pretty good relationship with the local machine shops, so installation and honing should be pretty cheap for me. and the ring set is only around 112.00, maybe less if I shop around.
my compression when I first got the car about 3 months ago was approx 300 - 260, on all 5, so it's down a bit for sure from new.
I am thinking the pistons will be ok, but if not, I have a car with a blown headgasket with only 114K miles. it should have good pistons, rings, sleeves etc. if I can fit the TD head on a non TD motor, I may go that route... if the block ain't cracked.
what do you think? Rings, sleeves? 114K block? RUN?

John

yeah, well, the donor motor is from the 78 D in my sig.
I would love to go up to a turbo, I DO have an 83SD motor... that darn SLS is just so awesome! I wish the non turbo head would work on a turbo motor... maybe if I swapped over the exhaust valves?
sorry, my choices are this:
1. pull pistons and sleeves from existing 79TD motor and re ring/sleeve it, then reassemble.
2. pull head off TD, put it on block from 78 D re install in TD.
3. pull pistons from D and put in TD with new sleeves.
4. junk entire set of cars and RUN from MB altogether!
and lastly, put the turbo'd 83 motor in with valves form i'ts head into the TD with the N/A head on it...

the turbo and non turbo heads may be the same. i am not sure about that. of course the turbo would be an upgrade. might be a good idea to just sell off the good motor and buy a good used td motor.

but good luck finding one. my favorite machinist and i bought a parts car wagon just for the head. but we got other parts from it too.

good luck.
