wheel bearing 83 300sd

my right front wheel bearing went out... so i ordered new ones and set to replacing them. I had never replaced a mercedes wheel bearing. It was difficult. I successfully removed the wheel hub without damaging anything and the outter bearing fell out in pieces. So i cleaned it up and took it to the machine shop and ask to have the old ones pressed out and the new ones pressed in. THey said they could not press out the old ones and that i had to use a chiesel. So i bought a set of chiessels and started hammering away. All i did was ruin a set of chiesels... I wound up reusing the old races.
Which i did not want to do. Does anybody have any wheel bearing advise?

I just did both my front wheel bearings on my SD and it didnt seem like it was that hard. just a lot of pounding and patience and a few four letter words. if you have any specific questions I an probably answer them.

It takes very little force but quite a bit of knowledge.

When you hit the race on one side, it cocks slightly in the bore. You can't hit it too hard or it will seriously jamb. You must very lightly tap one side and the go 180 degrees and tap the opposite side. This process must be repeated about 300 times because the race is only going to move about .002" each time you tap it. If you lose patience and hit the race harder, you'll end up exactly where you are now........the old race jammed in position.

Sometimes a touch of heat on the outside of the hub can assist, but, you need to move quick with a hot torch. If you heat it slowly, the race just heats with the hub.

I'm not sure why they said to use chisels either, seems to me like other than ruining the chisel you run the risk of chipping the old race to where you cant hit it, or worse expanding the metal of the race and tightening it, I would think a drift punch would be a better suited tool for the job.
