fuel leak/identify this part

My 190D 2.2 started leaking diesel. I found the drip, but I need help identifying the part it's coming from. It's bolted to the side of the engine, underneath the air filter housing, and comes right after the prefilter. It has 3 other hoses coming out of it.

What is it? I tried looking through some of the online parts catalogs to jog my brain, but I can't locate anything that matches what I see. It would be very helpful if you could also point me to where to buy a new one.

... If you take a look at this OnLine parts vendor's WebSite… http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/Drawings.aspx?bmid=19
and play around with the zoom-in/out feature, you might just recognize the part you are speaking of.
Then note the #(s) on the parts blowup graphic and look at the corresponding more detailed listings/descriptions of the part below the graphic!
I find this WebSite great for doing just what you are trying to do... come up with a name for something new to your MB vocabulary!

my guess is it is the diesel fuel thermostat 601-070-02-82

That's it!

Thanks Carson. That's exactly what it is: diesel fuel thermostat.

Anyone have a good suggestion of where to buy one?

MercedesShop has one for $136. BuyMBParts doesn't have one (that I can find). Performance4Benz has something that can't be right, because it's $20. But they call it a fuel thermostat.

No one else has it in stock, that I can find. It must be special order item.

If I pull the plastic guts out of the housing, what will I find? Is there any way to repair it?

... or more specifically an entire "Diesel Fuel Heat Exchanger [multi-parts]" with just the thermostat part. Take another look at:
http://catalog.peachparts.com/item.wws?mfr=OES&sku=D1045-117410 and this time note the left side has a snap-ring.
Now another look at: http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/Drawings.aspx?bmid=120 and this plainly shows that the "thermostat" part of the entire fuel heater assembly also comes separate and that there is also a spring, and seal rings or O-rings. So maybe what you need to do is clean and look more closely to see exactly where your leak is at. Maybe all you need is/are the less expensive ~$20 parts.
Unfortunately PerformanceProducts4Benz only carries this for the 86 and later SDL(s). I have "Googled" the daylights out this one so this might be a Dealer Only situation... but IF one or more of these smaller parts is all you need, then the dealer price might be more reasonable [IF that's possible!].
If it's easy to remove, a salvage yard might be an attractive option also!
I finally saw your last question - Well although the PerformanceProducts4Benz shows a spring, and seal parts, they do not carry these. I think you should see what your local [IF any] dealer parts department wants for these small parts and go from there. You might just find that if you remove and clean things up that this will fix the leak... or that the seal parts can be matched up over-the-counter with some VW part at a local foreign part store.
Q - How hard is it to remove? I see 2 bolts and 4 hose connections!

What usually leaks is the inlet nipple. IIRC you can get individual parts or a rebuild kit at the dealer for less than the price of an aftermarket thermostat unit. Good time to replace the tangle of fuel hoses into and out of the thermostat.

Thanks, Samuel, for that clarification. The Performance4Benz graphics are very useful--I hadn't seen those before.

I'll pull the thing off and open it up. I'm fairly certain it's leaking around the inlet nipple, so maybe I can just replace the O-ring.

... and glad to see the S.F./Bay Area team of " Sixto & Sam " was able to help!
Be sure to POST back your close-up findings and fix on this, YOUR THREAD!. This is so the complete story is here from beginning to fix for the archives.

Also, as "Sixto" alluded to previously, you might anticipate wanting to replace 1 or more of those hoses. I like to put extra length into many such repairs and " loop " hoses such that there is greater flexibility and thus less likelyhood of a stress break... AND if/when a break does occur on-the-road, it's usually easy to snip off the fractured end piece and reattach rather than remain broken down on the side of the road!
