Best year model diesel to buy????
I would like to buy an S-class diesel, pre MB/Chrysler. Which year model would be the best bet for reliability and longevity.
I've had three diesels, a 1968 200, 1977 240D and a 1977 300D that went over 300K with no major problems. Love that diesel smoke!!! Presently driving a 1987 300E with 160,000 miles on it. I like the 300SDL's but have heard bad things about the heads. Anyone know which year diesel gives the best service? |

Of the S-class, you'll need to avoid the 3.5 liter engine found in the 350SDLs. The 300SDLs of 1986-1987 are very poplular because they have the latest technology while still having the reliability, but they're getting harder and harder to find. Consequently, price is the highest for these.
For good old reliability with "older" technology, not much beats the 1983-1985 300SD. Do some homework, then find the right car, then buy it.

Only if severly overheated. Constant 120°C and no coolant going through the block will do this. I still have the stock head (few spares just because... mainly in the event I find a 300TD with a bad head and/or motor) and I can assure you, MOST that still drive do. Of the seven motors I've seen for parts local, one had an updated head and updated vac pump. Don't let that factor deter you.
