Greetings All,
Once again I call upon the experts for their knowledge of where to look or if you have available the book or computer with the knowledge to tell me what the following serial numbered engine belongs to. Here goes, the serial number is 61791212059104 any thoughts on what car it came out of and what year it was? I'd appreciate any input you can provide as usual. Charles |

65 HP non-turbo 300D. My best guess would be 1975 to 1981. If it has series wired glow plugs it is 1979 or earlier. Pencil type glow plugs 1980 or 1981. Maybe someone else can pin it down a bit closer.

Second Question?
Greetings Paul,
This engine has pencil type glow plugs. Whether they are suppose to be or not, they are. Just wondering what type of A/C compressor should be found on this engine and what side would it be located? Thanks, Charles |

Paul pretty much hit it in the head. The 617.912 engine is the non-turbo diesel used in the W123 from '77-'81. As far as the rest of those numbers, those are that engine's serial number. 617.912 is the engine type and the rest are engine specific, like a vin number.

I want the unobvious
Greetings,
I know the engine type and chassis, I want to know what it came out of, and what year it was. I'd really like it somewhat narrowed down to a year. There is a way to tell isn't there? Charles |

I believe any MB location (dealer etc.) can run your engine number through a computer and get the VIN, which would tell them (and you) "what car it came out of". I'm getting a mileage badge and the the MB Service guy said the VIN would give him the engine number.. so I assume vice versa.

I think I can narrow it down a little bit more. 617.912 would have to be from a 123 chassis. The earlier 300D (I think 114 or 115 chassis) had engine 617.910. Therefore 617.912 would have to be 1977 to 1981. If it originally came with pencil type glow plugs, it would have to be 1980 or 1981. To throw in an added bit of uncertainty, I believe the the engine in the 300TD wagon might be slightly different even though it as also 617.912 in that it would have the pump for the suspension. I am not sure what the interchangability would be, but someone must have notes on that. I do not know about what type of a/c compressor was used with those engines as I had drifted away from MB's during those years. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
