anybody else seen a class III hitch on a 240D?

walking through my local WallyWorld lot, I saw a nice 123, and noticed the hitch... can a 240 really handle the load that a class III hitch is for?
I was amazed that car owner would bother with a class III. maybe due to the accessories that that class hitch has available...

That is silly, I can't imagine towing anything with a 240D. Personally, I think any hitch looks ridiculous on a benz sedan, that's why I have a POS truck.

Ok, maybe not class 3, but a receiver might be useful. Think about the accessories available now, like bike carriers. Also a 240 might pull a watercraft.

I have a bike rack that fits into a 2 inch receiver. That may be what they used it for.

A while back I bought a euro,5 spd, 240D and it had SLS and a factory hitch which I was going to take off till i took a closer look. I cant imagine why anyone would need such a "beefy" system on a 240D I guess you could tow a small skiff on a trailer.

Maybe not a 240D but many of the wagons were used as "trucks" in Europe. The factory hitch for my car which is a European type which has the ball as part of a bolt in shank for my car has a towing capacity of 4180 lbs.

These hitches actually have stamped steel parts to reinforce the rear frame rails and the beam that holds the ball bolts to the steel reinforcements. The hitches are out there on Geman eBay and other sites, but the freight is a killer to get them back. The Euro hitches also mount into the holes that hold the shocks for the US bumpers so if one of these hitches were used here, brackets would have to be made for the US bumper and you could no longer use the shocks on the bumper.

Da'lan makes a hitch but I think they are over $400 with freight.

Wow...wouldn't just the weight of a Class III hitch itself be a bit much for a 240? Those hitches are capable of 5000+lbs. My guess is you'd be pressed to get the rig even rolling if you tried to tow that load....and if you put more than 300-400lbs on the hitch you'd probably blow the rear suspension out.

Mine has 75 kg max

My euro 240 has a factory hitch and there is a sticker in the trunk saying it will tow 75 kg max. the hitch has a factory dated stamp 11/83. I wouldn't give it up. i know it is not much weight, but it will come in handy sometime i'm sure. I want a small trailer to carry WVO on long trips. I get lots of comments about the hitch. I like it. What is SLS by the way maby i have that also.
