What about my Air Research turbo? Whats the differences between the Garret, KKK and my brand?? I'd imagine MB used turbos pretty close to the same specs..Right?
Thanks!

My over-boost protection switch on the intake manifold has been defeated. The wire is cut but the connector is still in place. Is this a problem? Should I re-connect it?

Also, There's a large air bubble at the top of the small clear filter going to the IP. Is that a problem?
Thanks Again!

Until you get a boost gauge installed, yes. The air bubble is normal and will not hurt a thing.

Smile Tunning a Diesel: I lost the thread. Are you still at it?

At present I have the same interest. I have a Mercedes with a swapped diesel engine, and I did the same jobs to ensure strenght of instalation. Besides what you mention, I added a transmission oil cooler, to ensure my automatic transmission lasts.

Would be interested on a link or paper where they explain how may a diesel engine be improved.

Mine is a aspirated 6 line engine. Injection pump is a rotative.

Would be glad to hear from your experience.

Kind regards,

PepeCone

I just picked up an 83 300SD Turbodiesel this evening. I've wanted another diesel for a while now to do some performance work on and as a winter car. Now that I have one, I want to jump right into some tuning. The engine "seems" to run great for a diesel and has good pickup. I'm going to do some basic maintenance on it like oil and fuel filters to ensure its solid condition. Next I want to tweak the wastegate for more boost and adjust the injection pump. Where can I find the best threads on this procedure? What other maintenance items should I be considering? What other performance mods should I be considering? This will be my first time wrenching on a diesel but I do catch on quick!
Thanks!

Year and model of the engine/car is needed. I-6 with rotary pump does not describe any MB engines.

I can confirm ALDA delete works great on the 617! Also, the next step before you turn up fuel (and therefore crank boost) is to get an intercooler. If you want to keep your A/C system intact, an Air-Air intercooler setup like MTUPower's is the way to go. If your A/C is sacrificial, you could do an A/W setup like mine. You could always do an A/W setup if you installed an extra radiator somewhere as well...

Also- now is the time to think about how far you want to go with this, because you will be taking off the manifolds and separating your turbo from the exhaust manifold to install your pyrometer. So now would be a good time to hack up your intake manifold and weld on a nipple, as well as clock your compressor housing 90°. Might as well do the intercooler while you are at it, but you could wait and just do tubing into the intake manifold from the turbo.

Best of luck!
