turn signal woes

Bet no one has ever heard of this problem...my left turn signal wont flash with the headlights on but will with them off. The left rear signal flashes with the signal flasher AND the rear running light. The signal flashers front and rear are dimmer on the right side. Also with the headlights on there is a faint light behind the left signal arrow in the speedometer etc dash display...the 4 way flasher doesn't work(new part ordered)...help!!!

Poor ground probably in the rear assembly, left side. Use of the headlights probably is taking what weak ground you have and grounding the headlight. Dim lights are a sign of a poor, loose, corroded ground or socket. Could be the ground circuit within the 4 way flasher assembly?

clip holds all the connections together ,i believe 7 .ThIERS A MALE AND FEMALE END THAT MAKES THE CONNECTION ,I pinched together the female end slightly with needle nose pliers to make the connections tight again ,mark each wire before you take apart the hazard wires that are behind the switch .Mines AN 84 300DT.After years of opening up the center consule those little connections get loose.

I see others are already addressing your turnsignal problem so let me ask that you complete a "Signature" so we will see the basic stats on your MBz in each and every POST... something like that you see at the bottom of this POST.

I agree with the ground recommendation and remember seeing a whole bunch of those brown wires bundled together... under the dash on the driver's side I think it was... I was trying to solve a tail light problem at the time.

Question - Who knows where the turnsignal flasher is located on these 1980(s) 240D/300D (s)??

Regards

As far as I know the red four way flasher assembly is also the flasher. Depressed, it sends power to all bulbs. not depressed supplies power to whatever side determined by the turn lever.

I fixed my turn signal problem by replacing the hazard switch. Everything starts or ends there depending on how you are troubleshooting it. The switch gets dirty with spilled coffee, soda etc. The flasher on my car is above the shift mechanism under the wood trim. A very solid flasher. Replace or clean the switch first before replacing the flasher.

Turn signals

My bet is the flasher unit first....mine had the same symp.....Removed flasher complete dissasembly..you will have to de-solder a couple of spots to get to everything...clean the nasty out..and was it nasty....25 years of who knows what... resolder the joints and that did it....You will have a good spare since you got a new one.....that and a marginal connection on the cabin side of the fuse panel.....Everything does indeed revolve around the Hazard switch....change the bulb while you are in there...there were also some issues with the (warning relay) under the dash that a lot of things tie into...mine had more bad solder joints.....Just cross your fingers and hope its not a wire like Sam (Mr Safety) had to track down.....He had to spend a lot of quality (trunk) time.....but he found it......

I figure I should add my woe to the list here....

Let's start out by saying that when I first started driving Mischief in 2004, her signals worked fine.

In 2007, she decided to stop letting me use my hazard lights. This was a problem, as I was doing a lot of commuting in bad weather and hazards are a bit of a must if you are stopped in the middle of the night on a curvy road in the middle of nowhere. We replaced the relay with another used one because we couldn't afford a new one. That solved the problem.

At the start of this summer, her turn signals started to flake on me. She would be fine... then she would decide that no, that turn light isn't going to blink, the light is just going to turn on and stay on. Ok, fine, still can see I am turning... I can live with that. Then it started happening more and more often until it was consistent that I my signal lights would turn on, but screw the blinking. All through this, mind you, my hazards worked fine.

Now this next part of the adventure started about a week ago. In the beginning, the signals would be on, they would blink...and then turn off entirely. No solid light, nothing. I'd flick the toggle off, turn it back on again, and they'd work for a while. The hazards were fine... until yesterday night, when everything just quit. No hazards, no signals... nothing. Well, I wondered if Mischief was just living up to her name and I had to get to school...so I drove her today. Still nothing...and I don't recommend driving on a trucker's expressway without turn signals at night. Not a good idea.

I know the electrical in my car has issues- when it rains, I can hear the turn signals (when they work) clicking through the speakers... it's terrible, I know- it has been reduced quite a bit since I took out all the carpet. The blower fan works...but only when you hit a rim-killer pothole and then it's only hot sometimes. So yes, Mischief likes to keep me on my toes. The turn signals, however are the most pressing of the problems. I can't afford to do much to fix her, but any advice would be welcome. I'll keep reading the turn signal threads on here and pass what y'all say on to my husband when we work on it tomorrow, and we'll see if this can't be fixed....

Cheers, folks.
