If I were you, I would listen to it run under a nearly full load.....for say a half hour or so......keep an eye on water temperature.....buy/borrow/rent an infrared trmperature detector/gun......check temperatures of each exhaust (at the head) they should be within 10% of each other......check the temperature of the lube oil, and along the sides of the lower crankcase where the main bearings should be.....temperatures should be steady, no hot spots......check the bearing or bearings on the generator end......should be warm to the touch/not hot........take a good voltmeter, voltmeter should be steady at around 240V.......generator set should not hunt, should run at steady RPM.......RPM should drop, but return when load is increased......should hold steady at maximum rated load......and not smoke!!!
I think it would be well worth the $900.......the only big maintenance item on the generator end would be brushes.......the diesel end, you should know about.....
