what part of the alternator breaks when running without battery?
I have a car here and the battery was disconnected whilst the car was idling. the alternator broke straight away of course. is it necessary to replace the whole unit, or just the resistor on the back?

rectifying diodes and/or regulator can pop on you. The battery also acts as a voltage regulator, to a point.

interesting. I've gone with a friend to pick up a car i bought before to find the battery stone dead. I started the diesel, took out the battery put it in the gasser and drove both cars home with no ill effects to the diesel.

I've had it happen once and seen it twice...
I'll just change the whole thing. |
