If the motor checks out as a later version (dated around year 2000) I will probably consider 10K. I'm pretty sure from the sounds of the ad they want considerably more.

Here in California diesels are exempt from bi-annual emissions testing whereas older gas Mercedes often have trouble passing. Our tests are run on a dynamometer and are based on emissions outout at various wheel speeds.

If you run older cars (or trucks) and plan to keep them for a while, running diesels in CA simplifies things.

My guess? It'll stop at well over $10k - all the nice ones do regardless of the "rod" issue.

I'm curious to see where this one ends up, too.

It brings to mind this thread about this auction a while back - same year and model, but with many fewer miles and all original.

The seller returned my email regarding the engine. They claim it was a remanufactured engine imported from Germany at a cost of $11k + $4k more for accessories and install. The engine was installed in 2004 by an Indy repair shop in Pasadena, CA. Since the engine replacement occurred during the time the current owner had the car, records should be available.

I too think this car will bring quite a bit more than $10k.

In the earlier diesel 140's, there is also the issue of the electrical gremlins.

IMO, the engine rods is just one of the problems, and actually and easier problem to identify compared to the electrical issues.

I know a MB mechanic who says some of the electrical issues r a nightmare to resolve.

I would stay away from an earlier 140.

Agreed. I've seen other W140 300SD's go for more than that on ebay WITHOUT the new engine.

BC, what did you end up doing with your 350?

SEASONS GREETINGS,

Hattarasguy, This will be a good car if it can be bought right. As was said, an S320 at a lesser price and less miles, is the way to go for the W140's. An S600 V12 car can be bought for the S350's price range and maybe with better cost of ownership! $14000-15000 was spent by the previous owners for the replacement engine with no sure guarantee that it was the latest redesign. I don't think you would put that into a V12 as a replacement.

What's happened to Braverichard? Since he got his S600 and his new Sonata, I haven't seen him post here. I hope he's OK and driving the cars to his maximum enjoyment!
