smoke when jumping on accelerator

I get a lot of smoke when I jump on the accelerator pedal,
Live in FL, and it does not get cold. When I need to punch it to giddy up and go, it puts out quite a bit of smoke (smoke screen) That is the only time it smokes. Has anyone done the diesel purge. Any advice

car is 85 300cdt, probably 250K.

what color is the smoke?

i believe there is blue, white, or black and each mean a differnet thing. i think blue is bad as it is a sign of a turbo leaking oil into the combustion chamber. black is unburnt fuel (expected when you get on it). i forget what white means. you can do a search on here and find it though.

if it is black smoke you are fine

Black smoke is horsepower you can see but will never use. Blue smoke is generally oil. White smoke can be coolant/water.

adjust of wstegate possbly needed

Do a search for "banjo bolt", "turbo wastegate adjustment", & "boost gauge pressure"-mine has the same problem/symptom-lots of fuel, not enough boost-if your fuel has been turned up @ the ALDA on the top of the injection pump to get more low end power it will also cause more smoke before the turbo can spool up & start forcing in more air.

yeah, I was reading other threads about the adjustment. It is only when I really floor it, and doesn't seem to be affecting power. I think the smoke is gray, not white and not black. is that something a amatuer could handle.

Sounds fairly normal. How much smoke we talking here? Is it only visible at night with headlights behind you or are we talking a James Bond smoke cloud in daylight? Any funny smells? God, I love the smell of diesel smoke.

Today I punched it to see and saw black smoke, not a lot, and it is more visible at night with other peoples headlights.

sounds completley normal. My 300D creats alot more smoke than the 240D, but both are really noticble in someone elses lights at night. What i ( and im sure many of use do) is when someone is ridding your but, u punch the accelerator and creat a big cloud of smoke they usuall leave u alone then, or better yet, pass u

Black smoke is unburned fuel hitting the exhaust after it has passed through the engine. Diesels need air and fuel to run properly, in a proper mixture. Change your air filter and you might get enough air to burn that fuel. When you really hammer it you probably will still get a little black smoke.

I just changed my air filter... but I just noticed the wing nut on the top of the filter housing is missing. and it looks like the bolt isn't long enough to hold a wing nut.

Would that be a problem as long as the three other clamps are holding the housing down super tight?

No thats going to just make for an aweful noise. These older diesels are rainforest killers. Expect smoke. You may want to consider moving to synth for the oil.
