The smoking is much less but I think there may be fuel getting into the oil, oil is starting to seem thin again. Could this occur from a leaking injector pump? How would you determine if this is the case?
Can you rebuild the IP with Viton seals?

I'm very curious. Any resolution to this problem?

The only point the fuel and base oil are in close proximity is the lift pump and injector pump as you already suspect. I have to wonder if fuel is getting into the base oil in the pump for example and returning to the engine. Ask a pump expert if this is possible. I think not an injector as you would be blowing black smoke as well. Also where does the vacuum pump exhaust hose go on your engine? If to the intake it elimiates it. If to the crankcase you might be sucking transmission oil through the vacuum system into the crankcase. Unusual problem anyways.

I think I may have solved it so far by doing what someone suggested in this forum. I ran a quart of transmission leak stop oil (filled up a new fuel filter, remainder in the tank) through the engine. Changed the oil soon there after and after 2 tankfuls (about 900 miles) the oil seems to still be thick, has not gone away, and the oil smoking is essentially gone. Now the car is in the shop for glow plug/relay work. It lives up to its reputation as a money pit but I sure like driving it over my 123.

So what are we talking here? Did the leak stop cure a leaking seal situation in the pump? Are there any internal seals in there? Would a small tear in the lift pump diaphram do this? Then again I cannot see a diaphram fixed with a leak sealer. If problem remains gone at least now you have a pretty good ideal where it was.
