Primer pump question.

1979 300sd,, I have the black primer pump. In searching thru the pump threads, I have read that the old white pumps have to be unscrewed then pumped..
Do the black pumps have a screwed in ,stowed position?

Going to do a Diesel Purge and filter change tomorrow and this is something I was wondering about during my research.

nope, the black handle style pumps do not require any storage position.

Not to mention the new style also does not require that you put a pan under the car to catch all the fuel barfing out past the handle as its predecessor.....

Are you sure about that? I have never seen, for sure, the later style MB/Bosch type priming pump. However, I have seen many, on various applications, over time.....my tractor has 2, one for priming the Injection Pump, and one for a "Cold weather Start" setup that injects some extra diesel just ahead of the intake valve......bith of those have a screw down, closed position.....as does every other one that I have ever seen!!!

My old style priming pump, does leak when in use, but is secure when properly closed.....and I don't use it all that often, just when I change filters, or if I need to troubleshoot or repair my injection system....I do my best, so far successful, to not run out of fuel!!!

The new, black Bosch pump requires no storage. Just screw it in and there it is, ready to be pumped.

This may sound like a dumb question but I need to replace my old style one with a new one. Do you have to pump fuel thru the system after doing the change before you can start up or not?

the only dumb question is the one left unasked. that and which brand oil to use... anyway, if you get it in without much spillage, you may not need to bleed it out, but plan on bleeding a few pumps anyway. John
