primer pump assembly 617.952

Howdy Folks:

Glad New Year:

Firstly: Just got the Primer Pump assembly- anything ODD I should know?

Secondly - has anyone been having issues with the new UTRLA LOW SULFUR diesel

this primer pump just all of a sudden just started leaking - and not the first of my diesels to some issue with new fuel- My Ford with the IH 7.3l NA ( non Turbo) really smokes with this new fuel - I have read a bit on the Toyota Diesel forum about the reformulation is causing more water in fuel - ????

Cheers ya

Glad New Year All:

Which pump did you get?

The new one is all black and the leakage that the old pump would eventually suffer is eliminated.

The low sulfur fuel is probably not the culprit for that leak. Those pumps eventually leak due to age.

Replacing it is a whole lot easier if you remove the hose nipple to the immediate right of the pump. Unless you've got a full set of crow's foot wrenches.........

I use a plumbers "faucet wrench" for extracting that primer pump, It'll fit right in there .

I've heard rumblings over on the Cummins forum about leaks associated with the new fuel.

Howdy Brian:

From Phil : FASTLANE - BOSCH D2011.13591 Primer Pump Assembly

As mine is leaking away from the primer pump as well - I have seen this leak before on others - Just on the primer pump - this one the whole assembly is leaking - all the seals just gone at once it would appear

So , of course I will think it is the fuel

And Stevo- you have heard this grumbling as well- On a trip up to B.C. Victoria , I took West route and one tank without adding a few gallons of Bio and my I.P. on my Pickup is really crappy now - I am running all B99 now just till I get get some time/ money to investigate

Glad New Years all

Cheers

Unkown about ULSD problems. Seeing as how that will be all that's available soon, there should be info somewhere. Bio diesel is corrosive to rubber. You will need to change out all rubber that comes in contact with said fuel. The primer pump is a "prime" example of leakage. Install a new one. I've heard that the black primers are more susceptible to leaks, refering to bio. I've replaced a primer last week on my '83 126, with the Bosch black unit, fifth one I changed, 617's, I did remove and replace the short fuel hose from the primary {clear} filter, did not need to remove nipple, these things are on there, elbow grease, and vise grips are helpful. Mashed my thumb, but was replacing, can destroy. It was leaking when pumped to bleed out air after the [now I know] faulty fuel gauge allowed me to run out of fuel, yet did not leak on it's own.

You've definitely got the entire assembly with the primer pump.

Here's the pump by itself:
http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1ZB135EQN1ZB135EQM&year=1982&make=MB&model=300-DT-001&category=D&part=Primer+Pump

Are you sure that you've got replace the entire assembly? Usually the pump is the culprit. The assembly might just need an o-ring.

Yes - I got exactly what I wanted- - I will post some fotos of what I am talking about where the leaks are - beyond the primer- figure is better to replace entire unit- as it comes with the primer pump included.

This Benz has had no Bio as I am aware - and as for running Bio - I have been running 100% B99 in my Rover almost 2 years - so far only the return lines and the rubber gasket around filler neck ( goo- y - thanks to the zealous attendants ) needs replacing - Have had a few converstaions with suppliers of rubber and Viton - I am lead to believe the rubber and seals since late 99 should / will hold up as well as Viton as the industry has been preparing for various mixtures of Bio to be widely used in fleet and other industries -

as for my pickup - been running B20 for 3 years and changed the return hose / plain rubber diesel line ( not cloth braid like whats on the Mercedes )

No leaks - no worries- so far - see what comes now that I have switched to totally B99

Glad New Years all

Cheers

I'm pretty sure my whole primer assembly is leaking as well. Does anyone have a link to the part? Or maybe just a gasket where it meets the injection pump assembly? I just recently got a big drop in mileage and have checked every line and found little/no leaks. The only place that seems to be leaking is the primer pump assembly.. Should I just try the pump itself first and then see if it stops hemorrhaging?

By the way, I'm new to the forum and to my '85 300D, so please forgive I seem ignorant.

Thanks.

That looks like just the primer, but thanks for the link. It lead my to the gasket. I definately would try the pump and gasket before replacing the whole assembly. $150 for the whole shebang vs $1 for the gasket...

Howdy Obiwan:

Enjoy taking the primer pump off - make sure all is clean in the area and get a new gasket when you replace onto block- if you will remove entire assembly

Also when you put things back together - outlets and stuff - i find is better to use LOCTITE - the weakest stuff - i think green - will act as good sealant and make sure nothing vibrates loose - you dont have to overtighten as you are working in a really tight space

let us know how it all goes for you - bets of luck:

Cheers

There is a copper crush washer that seals under the pump. That gasket is misnamed. It goes between the mechanical (engine driven) fuel pump (that the primer pump is attached to) and the injection pump.

P.S. Welcome. If you get your fuel leak fixed think about driving down for our get together this weekend. See the link in my signature for more details.

So, the gasket goes on this assembly (beween it and the main inj. pump), right? In these images it looks like they go together...

Nuts about the Pacific NW get together! The "gasket" is on order, but won't be in for a week or so. I'd probably run out of fuel on one of those scenic hills.. Besides, I *really* need to swap out my lower oil cooler hose this weekend as well. The leaking down there is even worse than the fuel situation. Hopefully I can get the 300D in good working order and catch you for the next Pac NW get together.

Anyway, thanks for the great welcome. I'll update on my progress with various leaks.

Howdy obiwann:

you got it - is easy to figure - gasket on bottom goes between primer pump housing and where it bolts too- trick - if you are just taking yours off - you can anneal the copper washer ( if not split ) - heat it up till it glows ( mapp gas works fast if you have ) on brick - let cool - now you can reuse - the other outlet you see in foto - this is where I suggest you use loctite - is chem resistant and will assure not to vibrate free - as well as not have to crank hard to seal - make sure to replace the fuel hose here - is shorty - 2-3 inches and cheap enough - this should be your pre filter - i like the ones with the brass in the tip

enjoy weeks end

good luck - I have no doubt you sail thru with minimal cursing -

cheers
