99 E300 Check engine light on

Last night my check engine light came on. This was not accompanied by any symptoms and the engine ran just fine. When I got home i refered to the owners maunual which stated that it was fuel injection related. Any ideas as to what this might be? Can the check engine light be reset?

The OBD-2 port is under the knee bolster, near the parking brake release lever. Hook the scanner there.

What could be causing this. I don't have a code checker.

Take it to autozoo or your preferred store. They can check it for free. The port is right next to the hood release under a little plastic door.

You can't guess at it and start throwing parts at it. That gets to be very expensive very fast. Get the code and let us know what it is.

Here's a 'wag': it's the MAF!

Almost all of the newer MBs have a problem with the MAF failing. But first get the codes read and let us know.

Gets the codes read, if its simple autozone can do it. If not you need the dealers super computer. But a free autozone scan should pit up the common problems like a MAF.

If it is a OBDII code, Autozone should be able to read it. If it is something else, you might need SDS at your friendly MB dealership

It's most likes the MAF and the OBDII scan will say that.

I'd bet $0.50 it is an MAF code...very common. I had the same thing happen a few months after I bought mine...changed the MAF sensor and have had no problems since then.

You won't necessarily see any trouble with the engine, it's just that the computer got readings it didn't expect (outside of the expected normal range) and threw a code. Usually it is a sign of a failiing MAF not really that it has failed. Sometimes dirt gets on them and can be cleaned. If it is the MAF code you can try cleaning it with electronics parts cleaner if you want to experiment, but I think its 50/50 if that would fix it for very long.

Did you change the entire thing or just the sensor elements like this article suggested?

I clean the MAF with electronics cleaner as a preventative measure thing. Every 6 months.

I bought the Bosch aftermarket as an entire assembly.

Arnel jim E430

Pick your car from the list and navigate to the appropriate section for the pat number.

Please be certain you have pulled the codes and need a MAF before replacing it. They are not typically cheap parts.

edit: you've got another thread going in the tech forum about a MAF or AMM. That advice has merit.
