190's.

I've had 3 different 190D's - check my signature line below. They have all been 100% reliable, never leaving me stranded (my definition of reliable). They have all had issues with the automatic climate controls (I wish I could have found a euro model with manual controls).

I've had a 2.5 auto, a 2.5 Turbo with a swapped-in 5 speed, and a 2.2 5 speed. I wish I had never gotten rid of the Turbo 5-speed car, but the other 2 models are fine. My current 2.2 5 speed car has 385,xxx miles, and no signs of stopping anytime soon. They have a more modern "feel" and driving manners than a 240D or 300D. The 190's are short on rear seat legroom, so if that is important, you might want to look elsewhere.

Actually i would tend to say that the pricelist from NADA are a little high on MBDiesels (a lot of them are already considered classics). An example is my 300SD, i got it for 1200 buck, fair price would have been 2000 bucks, price in NADA clase to 5500 bucks!!!
On the other hand Blue book prices them always too low. As of january 2007 i would say real world price are a perfect average between the NADA and the Kelley.
A 190D 2.5 1987 in nice shape should hit above $3000 everytime and start increasing in price from now on. If you find one for significantly less you are either sacrificing on the overall condition, or you should jump all over it. That is a find. The lesser W201 models are cheaper 2000bucks should be your baseline right now.

It's VERY easy to pay more for repairs on an '80s Mercedes than you paid to buy it.
That's what I'm afraid of...

Although this 190D turbo on Ebay looks pretty good for the next hour or so:

Doubt it'll stay below $3k though.

Update

I spoke to the guy with the car for sale. Says it wasn't rebuilt motor but he bought new a/c condenser, radiator, rotors, etc. All power windows and doorlocks work except one is slow. It has a moonroof.

Turns out the guy is one of my good friend's father. He is gonna let me see it first and drive it for a couple days to see how I like it.

He is original owner, bought the car new in 1984.

He did say, "Its a mercedes and when it breaks its expensive."

Sounds like its been meticulously maintained. 183k on original motor. Oil changed every 2500.
