Do I have the correct ALDA for a 1982 300D turbo?

I am a new owner of a 1982 300D turbo. I have visited this forum numerous times over the past few months. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the posts. I find the members here to be more knowledgeble and helpful than any manuals. I also enjoy the humor and banter.

Shortly after purchasing the car, I noticed a dangling "vacuum" line. After hours of searching thru vacuum diagrams, looking at many pictures here and other places, I discovered that my dangling vacuum line is not a vacuum line but a pressure line from the switchover valve to the ALDA. Thought some of the veterans here might get a chuckle out this.

My ALDA unit differs from every unit I have viewed. Notably, my ALDA unit does not have the banjo bolt connection. It , apparently, connects directly to the unit. One manual I reviewed shows the 1982 model having the banjo bolt setup. Also, it shows the 1981 model as being directly connected. I did check my engine number (617.952) to make sure that my 300dt is a 1982 model.

My questions are:

(1) Does it really matter which connection method is used?
(2) Would I benefit from replacing the existing ALDA unit with one with the banjo bolt setup?
(3) How do I connect the ALDA line to the metal connector on the ALDA? I have a couple of thoughts. One is to use a connector like the one that connects the line to the switchover valve. Does any one know where I can find these connectors on line? The second one using white vacuum line and black vacuum hose and small clamps to mate the line with the ADLA. the black vacuum line wil fit over the metal outlet on the ALDA the white vacuum would fit inside the ALDA line.

The correct one should look like the attached picture. I believe that the non turbo equivalent to the ALDA (called an ALA or something like that) has what looks like a fitting to attach a line on to, but I believe that fitting is just to send the unit the atmospheric pressure and should NOT have a pressure line fitted to it.

With a normal ALDA if it is not getting a pressure signal you can not open the rack in the injection pump fully and thus can not get full power. I'm not sure how the incorrect ALDA (or ALA or ALD or whatever ) would effect rack travel but I would wager that you can not get full power with it in place.

Thanks for the quick response. The non ALDA unit answers a lot of other questions I had. It also raises a few new questions. I do wonder why someone would replace the ALDA unit with a incorrect unit. I don't think I will take the wager on that I can not get full power with the unit. Again many thanks for solving this little mystery.

I think you may be correct thinking that the whole injection pump may not be a turbo unit.

Is there away to tell if the IP is for turbo or non-turbo?

I think odds are pretty high that the wholed IP unit is non-turo. Is there any easy way to determine if it is turbo or non-turbo? The IP unit has what looks like a metal ID tag on the left side. It is hard for me to read the numbers. Because of the angle of the unit i used a mirror. The numbers are small and my old eyes could not read them. Hard enough to read with their image being reversed let alone reversed and small.

If it's worth anything, the ALDA on my '90 300D is as Pclift describes. No banjo bolt, only a fitting for the pressure hose.

If it really is an ALDA off of a newer car on the 82's IP, shouldn't it work (if it indeed fits)?

I think that the 60x engines use a totally different injection pump so that is not likely.

I would try a new thread Pclift.

Thanks for the response and input. The unit on my IP is definitely an ALD. a board member sent me a picture of an ALD and it matches mine. I will be starting a new thread to confirm that the IP is a non-turbo unit. Again many thanks.
