603 head #
Just pulled a 603 head at junk yard, where is the #(17,22,etc) stamped?

Driver's side of the head, just above the #2 injector.
You'll see a set of casting numbers. Your looking for the second to last group of two. 603 XXX 14 01 Last edited by Brian Carlton; 01-21-2007 at 09:41 PM.

14's can develop cracks if overheated. Higher numbers stand up to overheating better. There's also a redesign of the oil galleries between the timing chain area and #1 cylinder but IMO it's not worth replacing the head just for that.

That's good to know about #14 cylinder heads. A false concern if the engine has not been overheated. It's always luck anyway, who knows what's happened before?

Well anything severely overheated is going to cause issues. Warping, cracking, head gasket failure, etc.
You're correct, we're second owners (many third and fourth) of these cars and you never know what has happened before.

The cylinder ovaling affects the short block (cylinder walls, pistons) but the heads are unaffected. Any #17+ head is likely to be good, unless severely overheated.
