At the G2G here in Marin County yesterday as usual at these things we were popping our hoods and mulling things over. We found a 1979 300D that does not have a Vacuum Control Valve [ VCV ].
My research has been to try and find a 617 engine for another year that does not have a VCV.

Can anyone shed any light on this question? Could this be a 617 from a 115 chassis?

We need more details.

Are you talking about the valves ontop of the engine that control the EGR or on the top rear of the IP that controls the tranny shifting firmness.

It could be a model without an EGR or it has a manual transmission.

EDIT: A 79 300D should have a mechanical rod going to the tranny, not a vacuum valve.

VCV... is that the 2/3 valve on the cam cover?

Are you referring to this thing That sits on top of the IP?




It's a valve that supplies vacuum to the modulator.

I just looked at my 300D and it (does not) have a VCV on the IP....
It has a rod going to the transmission from the accel linkage...
The plate on the drivers door has a MFG. date of 9/78..Made in Germany..
Does this indicate that my 300 is actually a 1979..?
I have heard that the mfg. date is actually a year earlier than the year model date on American autos...I do not know if this applies to the German vehicles...

The car mentioned by Sam is my car, a 1979 300D. Another model at the meet was the same year and make as mine. It didn't have the VCD either and I think that 300D models made previous to 1980 didn't have this installed. (?)

Hello...Thanks for the reply...My 300D does not have a VCV at all and the car seems to be all original...I have a 1980 240D that has all the vacuum stuff...Sam & myself have been through this stuff time and again....
Was there a problem with your car or were you just trying to find out if these were set up like this from the factory...?.......Cheers!...kevin

Sam, my 1985 300DT (CA version) has only the transmission kick-down switch on the valve cover. See attached photo.

My '80 300TD did not have the VCV on the IP. Tranny vacuum adjustments are made at the modulator on the tranny itself, which was passenger side......
It had single 3/2 valve on the valve cover. I think '80 was the cutoff for that.
1980 appears to be quite a transitional year for quite a few things.....

So your probably looking at a 78 or earlier car for the non VCV.

Sam, The engine I put in my 240 is a 617.912, it came from a manual trans car, and I was told it was a newer car than the '80 240 is, which leaves it as an 81 year engine. It had no VCV on the original IP (had to change it to make it work in the 240 w/auto) I recently had to replace one of the heater hoses, the number came out to be a euro hose that MBUSA did not recognize, if that means anything. I think it may be a euro engine.
