Something not usually found in the owner's manual...

Does anyone know the weight of an early 80s 240D engine, either complete or the long-block? Reason I ask is - a friend who is a Ford fanatic insists my '81 240D engine weighs more than the classic '60s - '80s 5.0 L. small-block Ford V8.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Around 600lbs.

A 617 weighs more than a complete 350 Chevy.

on a ford, the casting is VERY thin, the rods are very thinly cast, the wristpins are thin, the pistons are cast, and VERY thin and short. the head is thin, the cam is short, the rockers are thin, the timing chain is very short, and single roller. the ford is MUCH lighter.

Try looking at the shipping weight of rebuilt engines.

No bet. I just have this pair of 240Ds. One of them might be needing an engine, so I started thinking about a transplant. And my Ford friend suggested making a rocket out of my diesel. Like some have done with 240 Volvos!

I dont know for shure about the weight but I can tell you with certainty that a 300D motor and trans is heavier, A LOT heavier than a 5.7 GM motor with t56 trans.

I have pulled both motors with an engine hoist and you can FEEL the weight of the motor on the hoist with the 300D. The hoist's struckture was creaking and bending, it was pretty scary.

Well, I hope to solve my low oil-pressure mystery before getting into engine swaps. But speaking of a 300D, a neighbor wants to give me his 1980 sedan. It's been sitting for 6 years since the tranny died, but the engine still turns. Maybe I should consider creating a 3.0 240D!

Trannies are a lot easier to swap than motors... A LOT easier !

Unfortunately, that 300D has the dreaded Chrysler ACC system and it's far more rusty than my low-pressure 240D.
