300D 1982 Alternator trouble...

Looks liek my alternator is going. Is it worth rebuilding (is it rebuildable) or should I get a new one?

Anyone with a good source of a replacement?

Do a search on alternator brushes unless it is a bearing (noisy). Alternator brushes are easy to replace.

How is it going bad, can you tell? Brushes are about $35. Did this last month. Very easy.

By clicking on fast lane above, you can find an aftermarket voltage regulator for about $15. I have used a few of them and they work fine and last a long time.

hmmm

Thankyou all for your advice. Ill look into a local rebuild, to see if I can actually get it rewound as a higher capacity, but I appreciate the help and know not to bother with a new one, as it is just the briushes and/or regulator. The alternator itself is quiet with no beairng failure.

It could, however be the diodes in the alternator. Take it and have it tested at a local auto parts store. You can just remove the brushes without removing the alternator and look to see if they are worn out. If not, it's time for a rebuilt one. Maybe $90 or so.
