Now the only vacuum related things hooked up should be the brake booster and the shut off valve/ignition system. (I don't think a 240d has any climate control vacuum controls).
Your door locks, fuel door and trunk will no longer work with vacuum while unplugged but it will be easier to troubleshoot the shut off system.
Ok got ya, I have done that and the shut off works with the yellow pluged.

Ok, just leave it that way while you troubleshoot the door system. You'll have to pull a vacuum on each of the unlock pods--4 doors, fuel door and trunk, to narrow it down.

Is it just as easy to pull each door panel and check it there?

It's been a while since I troubleshot the door systems but I believe you can narrow it down in the bundle of vacuum lines near the driver's seat.

What would we do with our weekends if we didn't have these cars??
Under the drivers carpet, and under black plastic side piece are some vac connectors. They go from there to the drivers back door, or over to the passenger side. Then, under the front passenger carpet are more vac connectors. At that point I narrowed it down to the vac pod to the trunk lock.
I think you can narrow it down to a particular door before you have to take the panel off.

Thanks for the info! After I get the locks working again, I will start back with the cruise control again. The cruise has never worked the 4 years I have owned the car. I did take the silver/blue box under the drivers dash out and opened it up. It looked clean no burns I did take a few hours and took me heating iron and touched all the connections. I put it back in and I still did not work. I need to know what to do next. I have an ohm meter and a test light is the a way to check the electrical side and be sure I'm getting the correct voltage where it should be? Looks like the cruise control part are very high and that may not fix the problem and then you are out all that money for parts you dont need and can't return. So if you have any advice on that subject please let me know.

Thanks,
Lehman

Thats interesting that the door locks work yet are losing enough vacuum that the shut off switch wont work, something too keep in mind while troubleshooting.

Good luck with the cruise, I swapped out my "brain box" a couple times, it worked for a while, anyway I went to an after market one, it does the job but not as slick as a working OEM unit.

The cruise on my 85Td will not work if I just turn it on by pushing the stalk to the on position. However, if I turn it on by using the 'ACEL' motion, it works just fine.

A BIG THANK YOU! To all for her help! The Vacuum leak is fixed and it will STOP with the key now! I ended up replacing all vacuum elements! Every one of them leaked a little some worse than others. I finished replacing them last weekend. I was out of town all week and Sunday I decided to check and see if the doors would unlock or would the vacuum have leaked down and much to my surprise it all the doors unlocked after sitting all week!

Now next week I'll start working with the cruise control that has never worked! Is there anyone out there that can give me step by step instructions on what to check first? I have a test light and ohm meter if you can tell me where and what to check.

I had the same problem, Kerry walked me through it . Found out the rt rear door pod would not unlock. It would shut off if I held the driver door lock in the lock position for about 10 seconds. That was kinda cool until the door locks froze

'82 240D will not stop running!

I am thinking that your 240d vacuum system operates the same as my 83 300D TD. It may have a master vacuum valve in the driver's door. Try locking the driver's door with the engine idling. Let the car run for about two minutes then shut off the key. If the engine cuts off, you probably need to replace this valve. Go to www.dieselgiant.com for directions on switching out this valve.
