Engine swap W123 to W126
Hi all! New to this forum.
I have a question about using an engine from a 300D turbo(out of W123 chassis) in a 300SD(W126 chassis). Would it slide right in or would there be some modifications to make it fit and if so, how difficult. Thanks Sedecrem |

It's pretty much bolt in.
From the W126 engine, save the oil pressure sender, engine mount arms, and transmission. |

Also remember to....
Reuse the A/C compressor -- If you have a working one by all means do not remove the compressor from the lines. instead unbolt the compressor from the engine and just move it out of the way with the lines still attached. This saves you from getting stuck with r134.
Also I used the alternator and bracket from the W126. One more thing... use the air cleaner from the W126. The inlet on the W123 cleaner is too small in diameter for the fresh air pipe coming from the front of the car. Take your time and replace the motor mounts (rubber parts) as well as the engine shocks and you will be fine. Oh and by the way, Take off the black cap on the ALDA and crank it up (out) about 1/2 turn. The W123 engine is tuned WAY down and will not motivate a heavier W126 body.

Thanks for all of the recommendations. It really helps from someone who has done the job themselves. Question. Did you use a normally aspirated 300D or the turbo version? Thanks Sedecrem |

Both cars were turbos. I took as much off the W123 as I could air cleaner, alt, motor mounts, etc and found that they would not fit. The biggest issue is the oil fliter, which has been mentioned before. I had to go to MB and get a new gasket for the block to oil filter housing seal (I could not find one aftermarket), but once The oil filter was in place it was easy to get the engine in and running.
Some more advice -- do your glow plugs with the engine out and the oil filter housing off makes a world of difference! While you are over there you can adjust the Injection Pump as well -- look for threads here on how to increase the total amount of fuel available I did NOT do this but just made the "normal" ALDA tweak. to sum up... Keep from W126: motor mount arms A/C compressor Alternator p/s pump oil filter housing Air cleaner All throttle linkages, etc Keep from new engine turbo unless yours is better Vacuum pump water pump New parts: Rubber motor mounts engine shocks radiator hoses glow plugs oil filter to block gasket flexible fuel lines water pump (always a good idea) Air cleaner to turbo seals Take your time and take pictures of your old engine coming out it will help you bolt everyting back together later! good luck

Do NOT do that unless you have an EGT/Pyrometer gauge installed on the engine.
