Car is a 1979 240D. Glow plugs good, good compression, valves adjusted. Went to start yesteday, turn key all panel lights go on as they should then power was off all lights go out. Tried again and it started via proper glow plug circuit.

Tried again today, turn key all panel lights go on for a second, then lights off and I get a clicking noise for a second then nothing car will not even engage to turn over.

Please provide me some trouble shooting suggestions. Thanks Tom
