OUCH! knocking over every bump and when shifting!

Hi guys,
I've got a 300d (87 model) that every bump I hit, it makes a thunk sound. Same thing when it shifts up or down. Big thunk sounds. No idea what it could be. I'd rather work on the engine any day. I'm clueless! I looked at the diff mounts. The rubber seems still intact. There are some small cracks in the rubber on the two mounts but they seem ok. But every bump a clunk and every shift too. I hate hearing that. Makes me nervous. Any thoughts???
Thanks!
Nick

Sounds like it's time to start checking all engine/transmission/diff mounts. Also check steering and suspension components. Use a pry bar to check for play.

Sounds like the brake support / track rod bushing. Not a real bad DIY

It's coming from the back. Every bump from the rear left as well as upshifts and downshifts sound like the cars about to fall apart!

First, I would check the drivetrain as it sounds like possibly a flexplate.

The other spot I would check Is the trailing arm bushings where they attach to the subframe. Are you getting any shifting of weight when you change lanes or go around a curve?

The car is pretty level not any weird ways or anything, just noisy over bumps and when shifting. I hear clunks in both cases.

Probably a tranny mount.

It might be the sway bar links. They make a racket when they are broken. Easy fix and less than $10 a piece. Not really dangerous either...

I had same issue with my 77 300D (W123), checked everything and found the muffler rubber O rings were the problem, sometimes you get lucky?

If theres cracks in the flex discs, replace them. They're cracks under compression, gaping chasms when removed. Same with any other mounts.

Cracks = replace.

I second the sway bar links. They are easy to check out. Pull them of and move the pivoting ends. Of they flop around, are easily moved, or the rubber booties are missing it's time for new ones.

could that same scenario exist on a W116? I have a nasty thunk in the rear when I go over bumps, and I can't quite pinpoint it...got bad shocks I know, the thump follows the bounce of the spring, so it's got to be something on the swing arm, correct?
