300SD 1985 Will not heat up ..... HELP

Ok, i have just bought this 300SD from SC, (great condition, 0 rust) drove it to ohio, RAN AWESOME. Didn`t skip a beat, But no heat. i started investigating the mono valve, and it has a Giant crack in the rubber gromet/ diaphram. i unpluged the top plug terminals on the valve hoping it will open up the valve so i can get some heat untill my parts show up(replacement mono valve). But it still wont get warm inside the car. the only time i feel some heat is when i drive it for a bit, shut it off, go into a store for a min, restart with the defrost on auto and i get 20 seconds of heat, then the cold starts blowing again. Now since i have learned a little i tried 10 min warm up, driving down the street about 20 deg outside and the monovalve is unpluged, should i not be getting warm? does the car not like me? ... do i have a problem with my circulating pump? or is my monovalve my whole problem? am i on the right track?

P.S. This is my first MBZ and i am its biggest fan.....

What degree does your temp guage show? If it is too low it may be a thermostat.
