BMW icon cars vs. Mercedes

I was talking to my brother lately about my love for the MB 300SL gullwing and lately he has been looking at old BMW 3.0's, (60's-70's )etc...

For me the 300SL gullwing is the ultimate for Mercedes (a true icon car for them), but I don't know much about the history of MB.

For BMW I told him the M1 was about the first one for me that is trully an icon car for BMW. Although I really like the 3.0, 6-series prior to like 1980.

What do you think. Has Mercedes or BMW had anything bigger in your opinion than the gullwing, or M1.

I think the best thing that BMW produced in the 1970s was the R75/6 and R90/6. Their cars I never cared for very much.

As for BMW icons I think that there are very few than they really made

1. M1
2. M6 (the 80's version)
3. 850Csi
4. 3.0 CSL
5. E30 M3

other than that there really isn't much

I always loved the 770K for Mercedes, and the 3.0CSI BMW.

Gullwings are nice, but its gets old throwing yourself over that door sill.

My favorite was the 1972 BMW 2002 tii. Mechanically injected and what a sweet note the intake made.

I recall a 2800Csi as pretty nice for a production car.

The M1 is pretty rare, I put that in the Pantera / Countach type class anyways. Pretty to look at, pretty unpractical after that.

I liked the 735, early 70's.

Myself, I think of BMW as sports coupe people.
I think of MB as Sedan people.

Overall, I don't like the Bavarian cars that much. The local dealer here was a 'problem' for a long time. (same problem for VW, audi, and Porsche locally)

Myself.... I prefer the Stuggart brands. In 2 doors, I'll take a Porsche. In 4 doors, I'll take a MB.

IMHO there is no BMW that can even reach the iconic status of a Gullwing.

I would actually add another car to the MB icons though.
The Grosser 600 is and will always be the epitomy and definition of a Limousine (the kind where head of state and ultrarich VIP's ride).
Its little cousins the 6.3 and 6.9 could also be icons but at a lesser extend.

Benz uber alles!!!

right on!

Yes, I love all those models. I have noticed all the M cars go for $5-10K more (ie M6 vs a regular 635) I am surprised the 850 models don't sell for that much now used...

What about my '83 R80/ST? But, I do like their toaster bikes.

I actually like the (round tail-light) 2002 and the 3.0 Csl. I'm not a big fan of the post mid-70s cars, including the M1. They never did put an appropriate engine in the M1, and it looks to "80s" (i.e., angular).

For me the Iconic (post-war) benz is the early SL (not just the gull wing) and the 220SE convertible.
