What wrong with this picture (of my ignition lock)?

I'm trying to replace a failing tumbler in my 124. I have made the tool per the instructions here and it worked to remove the black steel bezel, but the tumbler didn't come with it. I thought if the bezel came off the tumbler was supposed to come with it. What else could be hanging up the tumbler from coming out? Is there another step before I pull it out? The lock has become loose enough that I don't dare remove the key, I just lock the car with a spare key. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it looks like you need to push the tool in further.

Its in as far as it will go, and the last quarter inch it feels like it is pushing the pawl out of the way, at least on one side. Do both sides unlatch? Do I need to turn the key anymore or just pull on it?

Once you have released the latch (latches?), you will be able to pull on the key and the tumbler will come out with the key still in it. I'm surprised that you were able to remove the bezel separately. I believe that there are two latches that you have to trip because the instructions are clear: you need two wires, as you have done. Did you bevel the ends of the wires?

Yes, they were beveled, I even tried them both ways.

Doesn't thte key need to be in postion one? I know you cant detach the ignition switch if the key is in the wrong position.

if the key is in the wrong position, the tool would not release the pawl. and it should be in position two to line up with the release slot.

Make sure the key is in position 1 and then wiggle and pull on the key.

BTDT, When I get home from work I'll make a new "tool" and try some more. Do the bevels on the tool push the pawl toward the center of the tumbler or out away from it?

FINALLY!!! After hours of fiddling it finally came out. Thanks to all for the help. Once it came out I had the new tumbler in in about 2 min. Wish it had been that easy from the start.

I just went through this on my 82 sd, is there just as much trouble getting the cover back on?

Follow the same procedure in reverse. It should just screw on.
