Changing Tranny Fluid and Filter - 1995 E300D

I've searched the forum on how to do this but did not come up with much of anything. Can I assume the process is similar enough to a 1984 300D?

The Haynes and Chilton manuals seem nonexistent for this model.

Fortunately, you can the service manual on DVD from the source. They're not terribly expensive (perhaps less than Chilton or Haynes).

Your transmission isn't all that different from that of the '84, but the torque values could easily differ.

Thanks, Matt. You said:

"Fortunately, you can the service manual on DVD from the source."

But I think you left out a word. Did you mean "download" or "order"? Or something else?

Order. I haven't checked the price for the 124 as I don't own one, but many of them have come down in price recently. Note that the DVDs for the older models may be in shorter supply. I'd order one soon.

See this thread on the parallel forum:

I suppose it depends on you skill level, but you really don't need a manual to do this service.

You buy the filter and gasket kit. You buy the fluid. Jack it up and use stands.
Rotate the engine so that he torque converter drain points down and is visible in the opening. You can use a large screwdriver to lever the Torque Converter in the direction of engine rotation.

Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid.

Remove the plug on the tranny pan and drain the fluid. Replace the plug. Remove the pan bolts and remove the pan. Remove and replace the filter. Phillips screw. Clean pan with lint free material.

Re-install the pan with new gasket. Bolts are a very light torque, 60 inch pounds. Pour in 4 liters of fluid. Start the car and cycle the shifter through all gears. Then slowly add fluid to bring the it up to about 10mm below the min mark. Check the car after driving for about 30 minutes to verify the fluid level when hot. Don't over-fill.

That's it for 30,000 miles.
