Unhappy Sudden LOss of Power!! Oh 'NO!!

1984 300SD

Help!! My car has suddenly lost all of its power!

It used to be a beast!

It had power, it accelerated quick, and the engine would shake the car.

It was a thrill to drive.

It had the Diesel Extreme makeover kit.

Valve adjustment

Radiator, water pump, thermostat ect replaced

And that was only a couple of weeks ago.

But now since doing these other things, all power is loss.

Change fuel filter, thermostat, ignition lock and housing, and all the fuses....

This is very strange...I miss the POWER!!

It used to easily reach 90-100+ on the freeway.

Now I leave my foot on the floor and barely get 60MPH!

I am guessing it might be something with the vacuum system.

The driver side door locks still opens and closes the other doors, but is a lil slow.

Anyways What should I do???

Thanks!!

Vacuum problems are unlikely to cause power problems. Check your throttle linkage and fuel flow.

Make sure you didn't knock the ALDA line loose

Thanks for the quick replies guys!

I will definitely check the fuel lines and ALDA tomorrow.

And yes, both the fuel filters were changed out.

I also have Diesel Clean, and Fuel Right, diesel fuel conditioner in it.

Do you think that that may have clogged the filter in the fuel tank?

Anyways, thanks again for the replies. And I will let you know what happens.

Tony

Some time back, a forum member reported a similar problem. After much discussion, investigating and trouble shooting, he discovered the problem. The carpet was bunched up under the accelerator pedal.

How much diesel do you have in the tank?

The tank strainer could be partially clogged, causing the car to bog when the level gets low.

Humm, it can't be the carpet one.

Although it would be cool if that was the case for me.

But yeah, I am literally flooring the acceleration. And it goes through all the gears.

Before it would just zoom! after it hits 2nd gear

And now it would go to 3rd or fourth gear going 30-40 miles in the city.

It feels as though, walking would be faster.

The gauge on the instrument cluster, says that it is about halfway full.

But I am unsure of the accuracy of the instrument cluster now. Because I have just changed the Odometer gears.

And have bent the needles in the cluster while dusting them.

I will fill up the tank tomorrow, just to see what happens.

LOL, that happened to a friend of mine with a 240

I could be the tank strainer, wouldn't hurt to pull it and change the short rubber fuel line if that hasn't been done, also check the vent and return lines on the other side of the tank.

BTW how you test, that the tank strainer is clogged?

And how would you change that?

The tank strainer is pretty course. If there is enough junk in the tank to cause a problem, your primary (in-line) fuel filter would likely get full pretty quick.

You could try putting some compressed air in you fuel supply line, which would clear the strainer temporarily. Remove the fuel tank cap if you do that. Or rig up a fuel container under the hood for test purposes.

Also check to see that you don't have negative pressure in your fuel tank, as would happen if you tank vent was inoperative. (You might try a test run with the fuel cap removed.)

Purge the system.

Run a can of Diesel Purge through the system, or a qt. of Marvel Mystery Oil. FULL CONCENTRATION.

Sometimes the tiny holes on the prechamber tips get obstructed by gunk causing the symptoms you describe.

Wow! all really great ideas.

The fuel filters, when I replaced them were pretty clear.

And the fuel going through them is clear too.

I will try that Marvel Mystery oil. I heard great things about that.

Its supposed to be like a, super diesel purge.

And i am thinking about emptying the tank and checking the fuel strainer.

Is the negative tank, removing the fuel cap, supposed to trouble shoot the fuel strainer being clogged?

Before you start purging and stuff, check the simplest thing, which is the throttle linkage. Have someone else floor the pedal with the car, watch the linkage, does the linkage come within .5mm of the throttle stop on the IP?
