Whats' it worth? '85 190D
Mercedes '85 190D, 168K, 2.2 liter 4 cylinder Diesel. Lt yellow exterior with brown interior. The seats look new. Heat/air system controls needed and the rear pass window inoperable. Sun roof works. Body good in general with a rust bubble on one fender edge and jack points. I have not yet inspected it but photos present it as fair-to-good.
Values anyone? What to look out for on this model?

I don't know "squat" about the 2.2, but in general: cracked dashes, in-op Climate Control, auxiliary pump, rust holes in the rockers, flaring transmissions, hole in driver's seat left bolster, odometer, outside temp display, A/C operation, sunroof cables and window lifts/switches, power antenna.
Great driving little cars, not sure about the power on the 2.2, but should be a tight-handling little ride. No idea on value, I have seen the 2.2 around on Ebay et al mostly under $3k for good drivers. With rust and some problems I'd guess more like $2k, but I'm not Kelly Blue Book or anything.

If you check it out, and there are no more issues than what is indicated, at $1750 I would go for it. I paid $2300 for a similar car (usual minor issues) a year ago. They aren't rocket ships, but are a nice handling, economical ride.
Good luck, Jim

I am not interested in the automatic but I will check it out if someone on the forum is truely interested. I spoke to the owner who sounds like a straight shooter...his phone number is in the craigslist add.

I WANT THAT YELLOW 190!!!
Thank you for posting about it! I have been looking for one, of course really wanting a five speed, but I love that cream yellow. (I know, it's a psychological illness to like yellow cars, but we Swedes like our national colors...don't ask!) I am some ways away, but I am going to try to buy that car without seeing it. Bama1, do you know if he said the car is still being driven regularly/is up to a trip? You said the owner sounded trustworthy? Rust and odors inside the car are my only two significant concerns. I just emailed him, but I will try to call him tomorrow as soon as I can. Thanks for sharing! Jason |

If you are REALLY Norwegian or Swedish, you're already looking for a pair of those HUGE driving lights to mount on each side of the grille lol
![]() The first generation 190 W201 sedans are nifty, safe, and gas/diesel misers. Just make sure there's no rust on it before you jump on it. With the diesel engine and an automatic you won't win any speed contests, but that isn't waht MB diesels are about anyway

the vac pump needs to work ,it does have a week point on some vac pump designs in the early w201 ,the one I bought had a self destructed vac pump ,the bearing was missing down in the motor ,not good ,it didnt destroy the motor ,actually just scorred the bearing ride.Replaced it with a junkyard one out of a 89 190d ,the newer bearing carrier had a beefed up design and the bearing it self was smaller.new and improved

He was taking it to have it checked out on Thursday and I have not called him back. He was pretty much upfront about the condition. Call him directly, he works swing shifts and uses it for commute. I probably should have bought it but I'm holding out for a 5-speed. He did say that there is some rust at the jack mounts but he has no qualms about jacking it up so it may be superficial. I cannot see it in the pictures...perhaps he can provide some close-up shots to make sure the condition is clearly understood.

Hey Guys -- check out Klaus Kallas' 84 190D *5 SPEED* in the cars for sale forum. $1200 -- a little beat up, but NO RUST. Can't beat that. I was going to try to buy it before I scored a Euro 300D last night, so I'll pass this along and hopefully someone here will buy it pronto!

How rare is the manual transmission?
Well, I started looking for a 190D last week. Since then I have found four sticks. Also found ten autos. I did find two of the appareantly super rare turbo 2.5 190s as well. The search has been as ardent as I could make it! I may end up having a manual transmission swapped into an auto car. I have this Austrian guy who seems to know these cars extremely well. He is comparing details for me now. But from what others have said about the automatics, I should really give the slushbox a chance before writing it off. Plus I can let friends can drive the auto 190D if their LESS reliable cars with one fourth the mileage break down! Jay |

seems that people with the 2.2 auto report actual mileage significantly better than the ratings. not a surprise, we have found that too with certain other cars.
but people with the 2.5 auto, well I have not heard any of them say they get much more than the rating. both configurations are rated the same. will 2.2 really get better economy? the larger engine really couldnt do as well, could it? thanks again! |
