Transmission issue??

Ive just developed a weird annoying situation. Sometimes it seems the transmission is slipping when i first start it up. Sometimes when I put it into gear, it just sits there and doesnt even budge until I start slowly pushing the accelerator. Once Im a block away from home, its running fine. Other times, it will just snap into gear and ready to bolt off.
The second thing is SOMETIMES it will flare on 2nd to 3rd and then hunt 3rd to 4th. Other times its fine. This is mostly when im pushing it though. If i granny drive it, it shifts perfectly fine. It started after I put on a new booster vacuum hose. It doesnt happen all the time, or at the same time of day (morning or night).
Anyone have this problem before. If it were more regular, maybe I could hunt it down, but its randomness is killing me.

Vacuum issue or not, it should snap into gear fairly fast. My Nissan started acting like that a few years ago. The shop did a fluid/filter change and cleaned to electrical contacts. It worked great for about a month, then something happened running down the highway, the truck seemed to lurch, then it was like the brakes were applied, and the tranny sounded like a power steering pump going out. I managed to limp it home, 1st gears was noisy, shift to 2nd was good, 3rd and 4 were good. But at a stop, you could feel the tranny pull, then release. During the release, it would make a grinding noise.

It was wrecking yard tranny time, cause I could not afford a rebuild in California.

Check your gear selector bushings, usually they are worn when it hunts for the gear.

rrgrassi, thats exactly what it feels and sounds like on the days it does it. when im backing out of the driveway, it will be like im also riding the brakes and the power steering pump going dry noise. (might have a leak there, just not sure yet). anyway. i hope to h3ll thats not whats happening to this tranny.

Retx,

Have you checked the fluid level and condition lately? When mine went, it all appeared fine. Not even a burned smell. The truck did manage to pull itself to the shop. But just barely, it was more slip than grip. Since it was a junkyard tranny, I never did know what caused it. The shop said it looked like the torque converter was beginning to self destruct.

I hope your tranny problem is an inexpensive one.

Have you changed the filter? A clogging filter can give some strange behavior.
