Hate to hear that for you. That was a good engine.
How many miles had you put on it? It was a little over two years ago that your purchased it wasn't it? Looking back on it it does not seem worth burning the alternative like that. Oh well, live and learn.

If I remember correctly the body was pretty much rust free wasn't it? You should be able to sell it pretty easily in your area.

I commend you for fessing up. I remember at the time of this thread thinking how nice it would be to have a fresh OM616 like that. What a shame.......
So, $2K for a car with a bum engine???? Uh...........

It may still be a "good engine" as long as the cylinder walls didn't get scored. I looked at what a head gasket and new rings cost and it was somewhere around $300 + labor time. I've found an engine and 4 speed with 125K cheap. I created this mess and feel I should fix it, at least get a healthy engine running in the car so I can do an autopsy at a later date on the good engine. It has about 9K on the engine now, I've changed the injectors and need to do a compression test.

There are many factors that I believe led to this. Crappy oil, and engine that was trying to break in. I was reading somewhere after the fact that rings that haven't fully seated in don't like WVO. Bottom line, whats done is done. If I do it again it would be 2 tanks, and a good system on something of lesser value like the 82 or is it 83 Rabbit I have.

I know $2000 is high I guess. I've got about $3500 into it with the new tires, and I think the trip was included in that number. Then the market has changed, yadda yadda. Its just hard to give up on it so I most likely won't. Shouldn't take to much to swap out the motor anyways. I had everything to do a 617, 2:88 conversion and decide not to.
The body is Wicked clean and for this neck of the woods its a great around town summer car, that and its pretty easy to work on under the hood.
See...I'm talking myself into fixing it.
Freakin car nut.

I was flipping some really nice Cummins and even at DT466 powered bus there one year on Ebay. That shorty was one I kept for about 2 years or so. It was a really fun toy which I used like a big van so to speak. It had the DT360. Sold it to a couple about a little over a month ago. They are converting it to run veggy and driving it across the USA. It was really handy, but sat a lot and with the economy the way it is I'm trying to get the numbers down. I've always wanted a Cummins powered Suburban and I'm in the process of lining that hardware up.
A fun hobby for sure, but one that needs to scale down a little as it was getting out of control.

In the community of motorhome enthusiasts, there is a sect that buy used early '80 rear-pusher diesel Blue Bird with Thomas body school busses, then convert them to motorhomes. They were governed @ 50 mph. Just wondering.

Are you saying you tried running cooking oil in that 240D and something fried the engine? I like the old body style of the 240D. We owned a '74 and a '77.

I bought my second 300SD unseen in Arizona and drove it all the way back to GA. It was definitely an adventure, until the water pump blew at the GA/AL state line.. Had to have AAA tow it the remaining distance home. So far thats the only major issue I've had with it.

Yes. One tanking, especially in a Northern climate is a no no. If you blend, no more than 10% WVO, I'd say that possibly 5% may actually be good for the IP if its moisture free clean oil.

A good two tank system, and a cheap old VW for experiments of this nature.

Mine was a fun trip, and I felt good buying it from Jim. The only issue I had was that the starter was tired and objected to the cold Northern temps on the drive home I think it was starting in the New York area, so it got to where I left it running. I like adventures.

Pushers are great with the noise in the back. Possibly someday when the boys are older we may convert one. I love the old Crowns and Gilligs. A few years ago I watched one in CA sell on Ebay for something like $2000 and it had a Cummins 8.3 in the back that had less than 10K on it. I wanted it so bad. The guy who won the thing drove out to pick it up and then towed his vehicle back with it. On the way home he was rear ended and the whole thing burned to the ground.

I ran a blend for only about 2000 miles and ran into starting issues. Changed the injectors which made it a little better, but it starts hard when its down around 40 degrees which shouldn't be an issue. That and the oil fill cap dances. Needs a compression check, then pull the head.
