05 E300 CDI, help me decide
Am seriously considering an 05 CDI with 25000 miles. It is a Mercedes Certified car. Dealer wants $39900 and it's a commercial lease return. I am wondering if these diesels will have the longevity of the older ones. I can retire in 5 years and want something that when it is paid for, will be there for the long haul.
We have an 03 C320 Coupe with about 115,000 miles. It is now or never as far as replacing it.

As far as durability the CDI engine has been avaliable in various forms since 2000 in Europe. I've not heard any glaring problems with them here or elsewhere. Some o-ring issues, some electronic problems. Not unlike the OM606.
Go check out the UK forums for more data. The W211 body you can research here.

I'm wondering why someone would lease a CDI. I can't imagine giving one up.

Those new E320 CDI sedans have buckets of low end torque. The road test said they can do 0-60 in 6.8 seconds. That's sure a far cry from a 1980 240D automatic.
Consider that my V8 1991 560SEC goes 0-60 in 7.0 seconds, slower than the new diesel. Just amazing. Yes the old SEC can cruise at 145 mph, but that's irrelevant in the United States, which has no autobahns.

05 E300 CDI, help me decide
Wayne, If you can swing it I would recommend it. I have a '85 300D Turbo and was going to "upgrade" to a '99 E300D. I then by chance looked for a CDI on a whim and found three that I was willing to look at based on location and price (under $40K). The one I found was an '05 with 64.5K, lots of miles for its short life but well maintained. Plus a great independent dealership. The CDI gives new meaning to power. I have since decided to keep the '85, it puts a smile on my face like nothing else.

There were several dealers offering new ones for under $45K, so if it was me I'd spend a few more dollars and get a brand new one. If you're a MBCA member you can save $2000 from the best dealer's price too.
