Is There Any Rhyme or Reason to MB's Chassis & Engine Numbering?

Y'all,

Is there any rhyme or reason to MB's chassis and engine numbering schemes?

Why does the OM617 come before the OM602 and the M110 before the M104?

Why do the W (chassis) numbers seem to jump around (i.e. this or this timeline)?

Thanks,
Shawn

I've wondered that myself. Maybe some twisted Stuttgart sense of humor.
