Please tell me what year MB started installing the (notorious) trap oxidizers on the turbodielels?
I am still looking for a good car, and I would like to know what model years to rule out. Thank you! |

I believe it started on either the 86 or 87 six cylinder. Good luck finding one that hasn't been removed. That's a problem of the passed that MB has taken care of.

Late 1985 calif only and 86-87 I think. It is easy to tell..Of the three 300SDL's I looked at before buying, only one had it. Look on the pass side of the engine, next to the valve cover. If there is a big ugly thing that looks like a motorcycle muffler, the trap is still there..If it has a piece of pipe bolted in with some shiny heat tape on the top, it has been replaced.

California version diesels starting with 1985, never on the 190D's. Ending in 1987 on the 300DT & 300SDL.
