Look for RUST. If the car is rusty, it's definitely a parts car, but $200 is a good price for a parts car anyway. The engine noise may be something relatively cheap to fix, like the vacuum pump, so don't assume the engine is dead. For $200 I would be tempted regardless of condition.

For $200 bucks you have very little to lose. Heck, some folks spend that at an evening poker game. {not in my circles, though.... }

Buy it!!!

{OH, and FYI, never post a link on here that you don't want somebody to try and nab out from under you....}

I just spent that much on an anniversary dinner. And I doubt you'd have to work on the car nearly as much as marriage! Buy it!

I had to go to Webster.com to make sure I spelled it right....
Spelling skills and character I don't believe are synonymous......

well Im 1 240D richer, body is in pretty good shape, little rust on the drivers quarter panel, and the right rear floor but all the main structure is in good shape, paint is pretty nice, the drivers seat is torn up but what can you expect for an 82, the engine doesnt realy sound that bad, its got a knocking when you rev it up but Ive heard allot worse, it didnt start well so I dont think the glow plugs are working it ran ruff and smoked when it did start and took a while to smooth out and not smoke anymore but no big deal for 200 bucks Ill fix it up and have a happy girlfriend

A thought.

If you use any bio fuels, keep a good 3-4 xtra filters(both) in the trunk. And a cell phone for her to call you, unless you teach her how to change them. Also, a valve adj and a diesel purge will go a long way toward smoothing the engine out.

I got my car for $300 ($100 + auction fees actually), it wasn't very well maintained by the PO[S], but otherwise is a great car after some basic maintenance that was neglected.. I way prefer driving it over my moms 2000 Oldsmobile, or my dads 1998 Ford...

it should make her a pretty good car once we get it all fixed up, shes pretty sharp on picking stuff about cars up so it shouldnt be to hard to teach her the ins and outs (shes going to school to be a mechanical engineer so that helps) any car this old is guna take a little work looks like the people who owned this car before the people that own it now took good care of it the people were getting it from dont know much if anything about these cars so its a good thing they havent owned it to long, once I get it home Ill have to try and find out what is causing the noise in thet motor, the guy said he took the valve cover off and the chain has allot of slack and with the miles on it it needs one wether its that loose or not the noise doesnt sound to awfull to me so hopefully its not a rod bearing but if it is a 5 cylinder will bolt right in wont it? (with the trans for a turbo) its always fun how many things you can do with a new toy when you get it, o and my other question both the front seats look very close to the same with they interchange from left to right the drivers seat in this car is in sad shape and our local junk yard has a 300D with a good passengers seat but the drivers in it is also jun, looks like the rust repair panels are pretty cheap all in all for 200 bucks cant beat it

240D front seats

I got a '79 240D in pristine condition from the original owner, a89 year old lady. The driver's seat had a broken spring, the other front seat looked like it was never sat on. I pulled out both seats, and found that you need to change the backrest, as the center armrest is fastened to the back of the driver's seat. I removed the seatcover from the damaged seat, and put a piece of 1/2 inch plywood between the broken ends of the spring, and added 3/4 inch foam rubber under the upholstery. it made the seat more comfortable, as the original horsehair was shredded under the seat.

Congrats on the purchase! I'll bet my buddy's bottom dollar you need a chain tensioner. And what's more if you've got slack you can "feel" in the chain, then it has probably jumped a tooth. I've never heard a motor run with a bad tensioner, but I would imagine it'd sound pretty bad. I wouldn't run it much until you figure that out. You can pretty easily eyeball the cam timing with the valve cover off. A 617 turbo will bolt in pretty easy, but IIWM, I'd try to see if you can get that original motor figured out on the cheap.
